Why You Should Invest in Gutter Guards
Tired of climbing ladders to clean leaves out of your gutters? As the autumn foliage falls and trees go dormant, you may find yourself having to clean gutters every week. Scheduling time for routine gutter cleaning and maintenance can be difficult, but there is a solution. Gutter guards are a helpful, time-saving addition that can prevent the collection of debris in your gutters this season.
What Are Gutter Guards?
Gutter guards are covers that act as filters to prevent leaves, branches, and other materials from collecting in your gutters. They’re designed to keep debris out while still allowing water to flow from the roof and away from the home. Installing gutter guards can be a worthwhile investment for individuals with busy schedules or physical limitations.
There are a few different options when shopping for gutter guards, and you can choose from different materials or the way the covering functions.
Screen Gutter Guards
Screen gutter guards are made of a mesh sheet that slips under roof shingles and over the gutters so that the weight of the roof holds them in place. The small holes in the screen keep leaves and other debris out while allowing the flow of water off the roof. This is the least expensive and easiest gutter guard solution to install.
However, because they are not adhered to or screwed onto the gutter, it is possible for screen guards to dislodge and fall out of place. Depending on the material, they can also tear or break down over time. Be sure to have screen gutter guards installed securely and to periodically check them for repair or replacement.
Mesh Gutter Guards
Similar to screen guards, mesh gutter guards allow water to pass through while blocking natural debris. Mesh gutter guards can be installed in a few different ways. Like screen guards, they can be tucked under the roof shingles, or some models can be clipped right onto the top of the gutter or adhered to the roof’s fascia. Mesh gutter guards are also fairly easy to install and range in price based on the material, typically plastic or metal.
There are some important things to keep in mind when considering mesh gutter guards. Cheaper, weaker materials can tear and become damaged by the weight of ice and debris. They may also require occasional cleaning by spraying with a hose or lightly brushing.
Reverse Curve Gutter Guards
Reverse curve gutter guards work differently from screen and mesh guards. Instead of blocking the debris and allowing rain to flow through, they guide the water to run over the top of the guard and into the gutter below. The design reduces the chance of leaves or twigs collecting in the gutter and also lessens the risk of damage to the guard.
Because they’re built to last, reverse curve gutter guards are usually a more expensive option. They should be installed to match the downward slope of the roof to better guide debris and water over the guard. Incorrect installation can compromise the effectiveness of the guard, so professional assistance may be required.
