When you’re dreaming up your next home renovation project, you might suddenly get overwhelmed by the number of choices for materials. Most of the time, homeowners define decision-making factors for project materials as durability, longevity, and appearance. Speaking with a professional will help narrow down the choices effectively.

Two of the most popular materials used for exterior projects are wood and composite wood. Natural wood is one of the most ancient sources of building materials, but composite wood is a scientifically created material developed in the 1980s. While composite wood has the look of wood, it is often the preferred alternative because of its many desirable attributes for exterior projects.

Let’s walk through the benefits of each for your next project.

Wood Has An Irreplaceable Classic Look, But Needs More Care

A large portion of homes across the country are built with wooden materials. While trees are built to withstand the elements, the processing of wood from a tree to create building material strips a small amount of its natural immunity to the elements. Therefore, wood used for home projects needs to be properly treated and protected from an abundance of moisture. Not only should the wood be initially treated, but also regularly retreated to maintain its durability.

Even when treated properly, wood has a shelf life.  If not maintained regularly, your wooden deck, siding, or pergola could fall prey to time and moisture. For these reasons, your wooden exterior and structures would deteriorate more quickly than some synthetic materials.

Composite Wood Has A Similar Look Without the Maintenance

If you want the classic wooden look, but need a material that will remain strong with less management, a synthetic or partially-synthetic material would benefit you. The most realistic looking synthetic material to replace the wooden look is composite wood, which looks like a wooden beam down to the grain marks.

This material is generally made from the scraps of hardwood and softwood bound together by original or recycled plastic materials. Composite wood deck is considered eco-friendly, particularly if the plastics used by the manufacturer are recycled.

In addition to the environmentally friendly aspect of composite wood, the material requires less maintenance than regular wood.  Because of the mix of wooden scraps and recycled plastics, composite wood is highly water-resistant, although not entirely waterproof.

Of course, no material stays perfect without maintenance. You’ll still need to conduct regular inspections and repair any damage and aging. You may also want to consult your contractors about including a drainage system within your composite wood structure.

Wood or Composite Wood?

Depending on the look you are going for, your contractor may advise you to use true natural wood or composite building materials. Most likely, homeowners that choose natural wood are doing so because of its authentic look and don’t mind the maintenance requirements. If you want the heavy textures and aging look as time goes on, you can discuss the different kinds of wood available that would fit your vision best. Certain woods are sturdier and more desirable as exterior materials than others.

If the bright and vibrant look is more your style, and you don’t want to commit to extensive maintenance, composite wood may be your best bet. This material can be easily colored to fit your vision, as it is available in a vast variety of colors and shades.
